How does one improve community health through design? In our group, we dove into the problems that arose in the community of Prospect Park. The community has felt a lost connection to the river and the other half of the neighborhood which is divided by a highway. Others in the community expressed concern about being connected to amenities in the area and how to get to these spaces. Through meetings with city leaders and extensive research, we came to the conclusion that senior mobility and aging in place is a major issue. Thus, we designed a route that supports aging in place and addresses accessibility issues in the community. This route tackles senior mobility through design elements such as custom handrails, non-slip pavement, and a new pedestrian bridge.

Athletes are seen as superheroes to aspiring young athletes around the globe. With this, I drew inspiration from Marvel’s Black Panther because of his cultural influence and suit design. Panthers have melanism which gives the observer a silky reflective look rather than spotted from a distance. Integrating melanism, the track spike is reflective so the athlete can shine in a different light with customizable text. Diving into biomimicry, the spike will incorporate the honeycomb structure on the sole of the shoe for a stronger 3D printed sole.
Early sketch iterations give a look at the design process with the emphasis on technology and patterns. I examined the Black Panthers suits and design motifs which has an influence on African tribal patterns such as the Kente cloths from Ghana. Additionally, I reviewed other sports shoes such as soccer and baseball to look at the shoe tying mechanisms.
